On the hill above Banská Štiavnica, Nový Hrad (New Castle) stands since 1571 bearing the name of the hill Frauenberg. It is a part of town which cannot be overlooked.

It was built as the counter-Turkish fort in form of tower with four corner bastions. Nowadays, it contains expositions of the Slovak Mining Museum, documenting the counter-Turkish wars in Slovakia. The Exposition on the History of the Voluntary Fire Brigade in Banská Štiavnica has been opened recently.

A visit to the New Castle may be combined with a tour of the Historical-Art Route with lower admission fees.
