Pezinok Castle

Castles and Chateaux

The dominant of the former royal borough Pezinok lying below the Small Carpathian Mountains (Malé Karpaty) not far away from Bratislava is its castle built on the foundations of an older castle from the 13th century.

First it was owned by the counts of Svätý Jur and Pezinok who were among the richest and most powerful noble families in the Kingdom of Hungary in the 13th to 16th centuries. It was originally a water castle.

The castle, in spite of repeated reconstructions preserved its medieval appearance of water castle, now unique in Slovakia. The Renaissance castle was reconstructed in the Baroque style in 1718 and the Romantic and neo-Renaissance adaptations were made by the end of the 19th century. The then acquired form exists until the present time.

In the 20th century, it was adapted to the new purpose - storage of wine with the stylish tavern Zámocká vináren. It is also possible to visit cellars and the historical hall. A large park with precious trees surrounds the castle, which is also a home to the Slovak National Collection of Wine.
