Castles and Chateaux
East of the town of Zvolen in central Slovakia next to the village of Vígľaš is castle bearing the same name.
The size of this old medieval building is surprising. Its history started in the 14th century. The castle gained importance in the 16th century when it was reconstructed and fortified under the threat of Turkish raids. Its position within the system of fortified castles was a strategic one. After 1690, the aristocratic family of Eszterházy, which adapted it into a luxurious residence, owned it.
It fell in ruins comparatively recently as it burnt during the fighting in 1945.
The castle is undergoing a massive reconstruction.
